Why is it so hard to treat pigmentation?
Despite extensive research, doctors and scientists have yet to definitively pinpoint all the factors that contribute to pigmentation. What we do know is that pigmentation arises from a complex interplay of factors, including:
This makes Pigmentation an inherently tough-to-handle skin pigment condition. It is often tenacious, fluctuates over time, and may even recur, especially without diligent sun protection practices.
Understanding Pigmentation: Beyond the Treatment
Pigmentation is a complex condition, and achieving optimal results requires more than just effective treatments—it demands a holistic approach and proper client care.
Factors That Can Influence or Worsen Pigmentation Treatment Outcomes
While professional-grade peels and laser technologies can help reduce pigmentation, certain factors may impede progress or even exacerbate the condition, including:
Common Misconceptions
Improper or Over-zealous Laser Treatments
When performed by inexperienced hands, inappropriate use of lasers may irritate the skin, potentially worsening pigmentation or causing post-inflammatory pigmentation.
Non-Compliance with Aftercare Guidelines
Pigmentation is highly prone to recurrence. Clients who fail to adhere to sun protection measures or a prescribed skincare regimen may experience limited or short-lived results.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
How long is the treatment?
SkinLab’s Pigmentation Peel Facial lasts 90 minutes.
What is the difference between using AHA peel treatment and laser treatment?
AHA peel treatment utilises alpha hydroxy acids to exfoliate the skin, making it effective for targeting melasma by promoting cell turnover and lightening pigmentation. This treatment offers gradual improvement with minimal downtime, making it ideal for those seeking a gentler approach to skin brightening and texture enhancement.
In contrast, laser treatments target deeper pigmentation and provide quicker results, but may not be suitable for everyone.
In addition to AHA peel and lasers, we provide a comprehensive range of pigmentation treatments. During your visit, we will conduct a thorough skin assessment to help determine the best treatment for your specific needs.
Is there any downtime? Are there any side effects?
It’s possible for your skin to experience a mild peeling effect, as part of skin’s expedite renewal process.
Some may have mild redness on part of their face for 1-3 days.
The occurrence depends on strength and type of peel applied, frequency of treatment and your individual skin reaction to the peel.
However, rest assured that you can continue with your daily activities, following the post-treatment care instructions.
Who is (not) suitable for this treatment?
This treatment works for all skin types and is great for anyone looking to brighten and even their skin tone quickly, with gradual lightening of pigmentation.
The type and strength of peel are tailored to address individual skin needs and concerns. We can do a small patch test before the facial to check your skin’s reaction and ensure suitability.
But if you’re pregnant or breastfeeding, this treatment isn’t for you.
Severe allergic reaction to this facial is rare. However, if you develop unusual symptoms like severe rash, itch/swell (especially of the face/tongue/throat), dizziness or trouble breathing, seek medical attention immediately.
How often should I do the treatment?
You can enjoy it once every 3-4 weeks.
Are there any pre- or post- treatment instructions?
During pre-treatment consultation, you’ll need to provide your medical history, especially details related to your skin, including any medications such as vitamin A creams or those prescribed for severe acne.
You may be required to temporarily stop the use of such medication or topicals.
Post-treatment care include:
- Cleanse your skin gently and apply any creams provided.
- Do not pick at scabs, if any.
- Avoid/limit sun exposure.
- Always wear sunscreen.
- Other instructions provided by a professional.
What is the difference between an over-the-counter chemical peel and SkinLab's Pigmentation Peel?
Over-the-counter chemical peels and acids typically available in lower concentrations (e.g. maximum 10% of glycolic acid). They are primarily effective for addressing very mild pigmentations or serving as a gentle exfoliation option for at-home use.
Professional or medical-grade pigmentation peels are available in relatively higher concentrations reaching up to 30%. They are administered by trained professionals such as aestheticians, cosmeticians, nurses, or doctors. These specialised peels are capable of addressing more serious unwanted pigmentation issues.
How does SkinLab personalise each pigmentation treatment for lasting results?
- A thorough consultation to identify the underlying triggers of your pigmentation.
- The use of proven techniques with safe, results-oriented procedures.
- With the support of our medical division, we can integrate clinical treatments when needed, ensuring your skin receives the most effective care possible.
- Guidance on post-treatment care to help you maintain your newfound clarity.
